David Spangenberg
With 30 years’ experience is security that includes Military, Police and Private Security Industry is South Africa and the middle East this experience has shown me that professionalism, honour, and integrity is not always the order of the day. But one must hold yourself to your own code of conduct on professionalism.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is to always to be prepared as much as possible for anything that might happen and to plan for contingencies. Also, to know how to think out of the box in situations as experience will guide an open-minded person through any rough waters.

Thus, also the reason I involved myself in training to ensure I can share my experience with others but also to share there their experience with me so that we can uplift the standards in training. As I am a Lifelong learner hopefully, I will never stop learning from life, or the academics.

With 23 years serving with the SAPS in high risk teams in urban and rural policing I have experience much and seen a lot both on land, air and sea. As a qualified Ambulance Emergency Assistant registered with the HPCSA I appreciated the fact that one need to be part of your community and the great feeling of assisting your fellow man. I further had the privilege to be a Class IV Commercial Diver and Supervisor from 2000’s in the SAPS. And this opened up another world to me in regard to training and experience and could once again make a difference in other people’s lives but also further my assistance to the judicial system in regard to evidence gathering.

Since 2005 I qualified as a commercial coxswain with various units inland and at sea and volunteered with the National Sea Rescue Institute and could also here assist my fellow man at sea, when they faced the onslaught of the seas.

In 2006 I graduated as facilitator with the SAPS and found that this will be a big part of my life as I thoroughly enjoyed being able to be an educator. I furthered myself as an assessor and a moderator over the next few years and as a qualified Assessor and Moderator registered with various training bodies in South Africa as I had various fields of expertise.

I then had the opportunity in 2013 to work in the Private Sector and moved over to the International arena where I have met and worked in all types of possible scenarios good and bad. This is also where I started to become involved with the PBA due their ethos for devotion and high standard in training, and the freedom to present internationally.

Professionalism consist out of many factors but the most important will be honour and integrity, with these intact one will only be able to deliver a great service to all. We should constantly strive to better what we do to raise the standards of the industry whatever it might be.
